We will not accept 2016 election results in polling stations BVD breaks down – NPP

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) says it will not accept the results of the 2016 general elections in polling stations where the Biometric Verification Devices (BVD) for the conduct of the polls break down.

According to the party, they are not prepared to experience what happened in the 2012 general elections where the outcome of the elections are declared in some polling stations while in some other places, people were still in queue waiting to cast their ballot.

“We will not accept results coming from areas where deliberately, machines will break down so that they will use manual verification. That will not be possible today and tomorrow. That is why we have continued to caution the EC to calibrate their machines well.”

“We don’t want to experience the 2012 situation where after the elections, because of broken down machines, three days after declaring the results in some polling stations, there were still queues in some areas where people were waiting to cast their vote. If some places declare their results and you still have other places now going to vote, it means the results of the elections are already known and will influence those who are going to vote,” acting General Secretary of the NPP, John Boadu, told Fiifi Banson in an interaction with Anopa Kasapa on Kasapa 102.5 FM, Monday.

He said it for that reason why he and some other stalwarts in the NPP are firm supporters against the counting of ballot of “Special Voting”.

“Once you do that you determine the elections before the actual elections and it is never done. We’ve been supporting this for a very long time whether our people like it or not that is what I believe is the right way to go. In the elections, there is the need for something that will provide equal platform for everybody. It doesn’t matter whether the NPP or NDC likes it,” he posited.

Commenting further on the issue, the Acting Chief Scribe of the elephant family said the NPP can only accept the results of the polls in polling stations where manual verification is used to verify voters under extreme conditions when the BVD breaks down.
