The road has been long and tortuous but the object to traverse it has finally materialized; and that is what satisfaction is all about. The shouts of “NANA ADDO WILL NEVER BE PRESIDENT” was echoed and re-echoed, but in the end, it was the will of God, backed by the voice of the people, that has prevailed. The waiting was long and the anxiety was palpable but in the end, patriotism, motivated by sense of reasoning, is what prevailed.
After being in the Ghana’s political game for close to four decades, during which all his days and energies were expended on broadening the frontiers of integrity, freedom, equity, peace and justice, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has finally realized what he had been dreaming about. This certainly did not come easy, and the task ahead is pretty clear. Expectations of Ghanaians, after 8years of astounding ineptitude and fantastic corruption on the part of John Mahama-led NDC government, the good people of Ghana, justifiably, have extremely high expectations.
The level of eagerness of ordinary Ghanaians to remove NDC from office actually moved them to the polling stations 12hours before the exercise began; and this is pretty obvious: when the masses exhibit this level of enthusiasm towards an upcoming opportunity to cast a ballot in a democratic exercise, at a time their socioeconomic well-being have been so much debased, then, it stands to reason that the incumbent government is in deep trouble.
But in the face of this clearly written signs on the wall, propagandists of the NDC government tightly wrapped themselves up in thick bundles of self-denial apparels, and dished out ruthless verbal tirades on anybody that dared raise a finger concerning drastic tail-spin of the economy. Men of God who dared speak were made minced meat of. Civil society Organizations that conducted scientific research which returned a clear verdict of massive defeat for the ruling NDC government were branded evil agents of the main opposition NPP, and their activities were boycotted.
And in the last few days to the elections, the entire media space was hijacked by the legion of NDC government’s insipid propagandists. That exercise, obviously, came at a prohibitive cost, the purpose of which was to throw rocks into the eyes of the public. They used that period to tell suffering Ghanaians that we had absolutely no reason to claim there was hardship in the country because of Circle Interchange, Kasoa interchange, Ridge Hospital, Community Day Schools, etc. But during all those reckless media escapades, the good people of Ghana, who were deeply hurting, simply kept their cool.
In the end, the verdict has been declared, as popularly expressed by the good people of this country, in a peaceful and orderly manner. The task now is to join hands and, together, work to bring back our nation’s lost glory.
The Daily Statesman would like to take this opportunity to wish the good people of Ghana well in the coming years, and also congratulate Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the NPP on their resounding victory.
Ghana is the ultimate winner and we must all be proud of our maturing democratic experience. God bless our homeland Ghana!
