Volta Youth for Development, a pressure group, has cautioned the ruling National Democratic Congress to desist from belittling the intelligence of the people of the Volta region in an attempt to win votes for the December 7 elections.
According to a statement signed by Innocent Supremo Esimebia Tetteh, convener of the group, and four others, the last thing any Voltarian would take from any person or group is an attack on their reputation.
The statement was a response to an earlier press release by a group known as Social Democratic Forum which, according to the Volta Youth for Development, sought to paint Voltarians as ungrateful simply because they have been agitating against the NDC and President Mahama.
"We have come across the current article of this President John Mahama sponsored group, Social Democrats Forum, who consistently through their articles, have threatened and disrespected the people of Volta Region,” the group noted.
The Social Democrats Forum, in a previous article, took issues with the people of the Volta region, accusing them of showing support to the opposition New Patriotic Party.
The Social Democrats Forum further described Voltarians as ungrateful for neglecting President Mahama when “Northerners never abandoned Ex-President Rawlings when he was the leader of the NDC.”
However, the Volta Youth for Development indicated that they were shocked by the issues raised by the other group since Northerners had rather benefited more under the NDC than the Voltarians, citing the upgrading of an airport, a teaching hospital, a university, all in the northern regions to buttress their argument.
"Secondly, during the 2012 elections with President Mahama as the flagbearer of NDC, the Volta region worked so hard for the NDC that not a single parliamentary seat was won by the NPP in the region, but the three northern regions gifted the NPP with eight seats,” the group added.
According to them, they find it extremely annoying for a group being funded by President Mahama to continuously drag the reputation of the people of the Volta region through the mud.
The VYD pointed out that the people of the Volta region are "not zombies to tow a specific line irrespective of how good or bad the thing is.”
According to them, Voltarians are rather open-minded people who critically analyze issues well before they take a specific stand.
The group stated that they find it difficult that “this President Mahama sponsored group want to dictate to Voltarians which political party we are to support individually or collectively.”
The statement observed that even though the people of the north are their brothers, it is equally important for people in the northern region to call the Mahama sponsored group to order in order to avoid any unhealthy rivalry between the two tribes.
"Northerners are a very lovely people. We have both lived in harmony for a long time, so we will advise our northern brothers all over Ghana to advise this group to desist from using their northern image to push this selfish agenda of theirs. If the northerners who have been our brothers for a long time fail to call this group to order but watch them to continue fuel this dangerous tribal fire, we will not have any alternative but to respond in equal measure,” the statement ended.
