A seven-member panel of the Supreme Court has set Monday, November 7 as date on which to give judgement in the case brought before it by the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC).
The Commission is praying the Court to overturn a High Court decision, which granted the flagbearer of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom, an opportunity to re-file his presidential nomination forms originally rejected for irregularities.
PPP was made to file its statement of case on Thursday, November 3 after the apex court of the land heard the case for the first time on Wednesday, November 2 before Justice Gabriel Pwamang.
On Friday, President of the panel Sophia Adinyira said just as directed by the Chief Justice for an expeditious determination of the matter, judgement will be pronounced on Monday. EC Vrs NDP Separately, the absence of the EC in court led to the adjournment by hours of its case with the National Democratic Party (NDP).
An Accra High Court was expected to hear the case Friday morning but was forced to adjourn it to 2pm same day to give the EC chance to make an appearance. EC Vrs PNC And the case between the Commission and the People’s National Convention (PNC) will be determined on Thursday, November 10 as set by the High Court. PNC just like NDP is challenging the disqualification of its presidential nominee, Dr Edward Nasigre Mahama, by the EC.
Though worries have been raised that the court cases may affect the electoral calendar, the chair of the Commission, Charlotte Osei, on Thursday told BBC’s Akwasi Sarpong in a Facebook Live interview that that is far from the situation. She says everything is on course.
“Ghana is set. Elections are going to be very transparent, very inclusive, very credible and there is lots of integrity mechanisms in our system to ensure that what people of Ghana put in the ballot box is what the Electoral Commission is going to declare as results.”
