The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC)
is likely to lose about 20,000 votes from teachers across the country who have
vowed to vote against the current government for implementing policies that are
detrimental to them. The teachers who are members of the Coalition of
Concerned Teachers Ghana are protesting government’s decision to pay newly
recruited teachers only three months of their salary arrears irrespective of the
number of years the said teachers have worked.
The teachers also say
their promotion arrears have not been paid hence they are calling on all their
members to vote out the government.
Speaking to EIB Network’s Musah
Lansah in an interview after a press conference to make their intentions known,
the Upper West Regional Chairman of the CCT Alhassan Abdallah Salifu said,” we
are not doing this with a partisan mindset but based on our convictions as
teachers who have not been treated right”.
According to him, their
membership cuts across all political divide including die hard members of the
ruling NDC.
” It will surprise you to note that the leadership of the CCT
in the upper west region has some serious members of the NDC among us. We are
interested in ensuring that our members are treated right”, he told Musah
Lansah.
He added that, they will ensure that all their about 20,000
members vote against the NDC.”How can I work for over a year only for you to pay
me three months salary?, he quizzed.
