The Ghana Nurse-Midwife Trainees’ Association
(GNMTA) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to government to respond to their concerns
over unpaid allowances and postings or face their wrath.Over 50 members
of the association took to the principal streets of the Ashanti regional
capital, Kumasi, on Friday July 29 to march against the government over the
delay in paying their allowances.
The trainees have warned that failure
to heed their call will result in a demonstration on August 15.
Speaking
to journalists, the national president of the association, Godwin Akazi, said:
“It is heart-breaking and mind boggling and thought-provoking to complete, pass
licensing examination, and register with the regulatory agencies and even serve
the nation selflessly, diligently, and patriotically for a year and yet be
abandoned to waste away at home without being employed. Government has not only
breached the terms of the bond, but has failed to make use of the ever-ready
human resource available in the health sector,” he stated.
“As
law-abiding citizens, who are aware of our civic responsibility, we will
continue to explore every diplomatic route available to get our concerns
addressed. We will be left with no option than to give the government another
14-day ultimatum to respond to all issues raised or we prepare for another
peaceful demonstration in the nation’s capital on 15 August 2016 to drum home
our long overdue demands.” |
